This session will explore how respiratory therapists (RTs) can leverage quality improvement (QI) to advance professionalization in the field while implementing practical, meaningful changes in patient care. Led by two RTs who successfully transitioned from clinical practice to QI roles, this webinar will demystify the QI process, demonstrating how small-scale improvements can drive significant professional and patient care advancements.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how QI contributes to the professionalization of respiratory therapy and strengthens RTs’ role in healthcare.

  3. Identify simple, low-barrier QI methods that RTs can integrate into daily practice.
  4. Recognize the role of RTs in leading interdisciplinary QI initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
  5. Develop a practical plan to implement a small QI project in their own workplace.

About the Presenters:

Danielle McDonagh is a healthcare professional with 15 years of experience in patient care, quality improvement, and system transformation. She began her career as a respiratory therapist in diverse clinical settings before transitioning to roles focused on patient safety, staff well-being, and quality improvement. A certified professional coach and advocate for human potential, Danielle is passionate about empowering RTs to drive meaningful change and improve patient outcomes.

Ron Gorospe is a healthcare professional with over 25 years of experience, including 14 years in quality improvement. He started as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, working across acute care, diagnostics, and community settings. Transitioning into quality improvement, he has supported primary care physicians with practice-level initiatives. In his current role as an Improvement Consultant at Interior Health Authority, Ron leads QI efforts, leveraging data-driven decision-making and system optimization to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. He collaborates with healthcare leaders, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to implement evidence-based practices and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
