Respiratory clinics: What can we learn from other clinics? Their victories, their failures, and their innovations

Amanda Babineau, RRT, CRE

The primary care landscape in Canada has changed. Certified respiratory educators are
being asked to not only deliver evidence-based care to patients with asthma and/or chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but also to manage, operate, and, sometimes, create
respiratory clinics. As RT educators, we learn how to educate patients about their disease and
often help in the decision-making process for treatment, however, we may not have learned
how to manage and operate these Respiratory Clinics.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of their clinics, and to recognize the need for change.
  2. Learn new ways of offering their services and of managing their caseloads, so that patients can receive the care they need in a timely manner.
  3. Better understand the processes involved in running and building a primary care clinic.

Michael MacAulay, BSc, RRT; Jason Danbrook, RRT; Allison Innes-Wiens, RRT, MSc, CRE

End of life care is a challenging aspect of a respiratory therapist’s job, with evidence of negative
mental health impacts following these situations. However, there are strategies to improve this
experience for everyone involved, from the care providers to patients and families.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Engage in discussions on comfort level of respiratory therapists performing compassionate extubations, withdrawing care, and impacts to the RT’s long-term mental health.
  2. Participate in small group discussion to share lived experiences, current practices, and RT student education methods relating to end-of-life care.
  3. Learn strategies, discuss guidelines and review job aids to reduce negative mental health impacts and provide a compassionate, family-centered approach to end of life care.
