Speaker: Clare Smith, PT, BSc – Research Coordinator & Physiotherapist, University of Calgary (Foothills Hospital)

Webinar Description:
Respiratory viral illnesses can trigger exacerbations in patients with Cystic Fibrosis and Bronchiectasis, making timely identification and treatment essential. Effective airway clearance helps patients breathe more easily, reduces complications, and can impact length of stay and other acute care outcomes. However, finding efficient methods that minimize manual intervention while optimizing care delivery remains a challenge.

In this session, Clare Smith will share insights into innovative approaches in airway clearance that are improving outcomes for vulnerable respiratory patients.

Session Objectives:

  • Review evidence-based data and clinical guidelines
  • Discuss indications and contraindications for various Airway Clearance Techniques (ACTs)
  • Explore the role of Oscillation Lung Expansion (OLE) therapy in acute care settings

About the Speaker:
Clare Smith, PT, BSc, is the Cystic Fibrosis Research Coordinator at the University of Calgary. She is a member of the CanACT group, which promotes clinical trial activity in Canada, and serves as the Adult PT representative on the Cystic Fibrosis Canada working group developing Standards of Care and Clinical Practice Guidelines.
