Speaker: Adam Buettner, RRT

Webinar Date: September 17, 2026

Webinar Time: 12 :00pm (EST Time Zone)

Webinar Description

Respiratory therapists practise in environments characterized by high clinical acuity, emotional intensity, and frequent exposure to critical incidents such as resuscitations, airway emergencies, and end-of-life care. These experiences can contribute to acute stress reactions, moral distress, and longer-term impacts on professional wellbeing. This webinar examines the role of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), within the healthcare setting in Canada. Participants will explore evidence-informed principles, scope and limitations of debriefing, and considerations for supporting psychological safety and team functioning following high-impact clinical events.

Learning Outcomes

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Examine the purpose, principles, and limitations of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
  • Reflect on clinical situations commonly encountered by healthcare providers in which structured debriefing may support professional practice and team wellbeing.
  • Identify indicators of acute and cumulative stress in colleagues and describe appropriate pathways for peer support, escalation, and referral to professional resources.
