Clinical Educator, PPL, Respiratory
We are seeking a dynamic individual to lead the advancement of Respiratory Therapy (RT) within an interprofessional context. The Professional Practice Leader (PPL) for Practice and Education of Respiratory Therapy promotes the mission, vision, and values of North York General across the organization to provide the highest quality person-centred care. Summary of Duties:
The Professional Practice Leader of Respiratory Therapy reports directly to the Director of the Emergency Department, Professional Practice Research and Education, and Co-Director for the Centre of Education.
Practice and Leadership
Your goal in this position is to promote the advancement of the Respiratory Therapy (RT) profession within the domains of practice, education, and research. In partnership with the team of Professional Practice Leaders (PPL) and the Clinical Nurse Educators (CNE) you will facilitate evidence-based practices and principles to support the delivery of integrated patient and family centered care and the advancement of the Hospital’s strategic initiatives through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation.
In this role, you will mentor and advocate for your RT work colleagues across the organization and will provide consultation to clinical programs including providing support to managers, directors, and the organization. In this role you will facilitate, lead, and maintain the student/learner placement programs. In addition, you will promote excellence in Respiratory Therapy practice and Patient and Family Centered Care at all sites and will develop linkages with external academic partners such as Michener, and regulatory bodies. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers, and families.
- Provide expert advice on corporate practices and processes pertaining to Respiratory Therapy.
- Monitor and interpret relevant changes in standards, legislation and scope of practice as it pertains to RTs within the organization with regards to impact and implementation.
- Lead systems that address and monitor evidence-based practices in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and implement education plans, in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Educators (CNEs), Clinical Team Managers (CTMs) and other internal stakeholders to meet educational
- Design effective systems and processes, with our academic partners, to develop, coordinate and evaluate student/learner education and clinical placements.
- Lead the integration of evidence-based practice into policies, guidelines, and standards of Care for RT practice and interprofessional care in partnership with the organization’s leadership.
- Promotes an environment of practice inquiry, participation in research and scholarly work
- Promotes profession-specific initiatives within the hospital and externally
- Collaborate with academic partners to develop and participate in relevant research, as defined by our patient population.
- Provide leadership on key projects related to patient safety and care including RT initiatives and clinical education.
- Lead in the provision of orientation to staff and students.
- Act as a resource to support decision making for clinical workload coverage within available resources with the CTM.
- Assist with the identification and product evaluation of capital and operational equipment needs for Respiratory Services Centre wide in collaboration with the CTM.
- Collaborates with CTM and Human Resources (HR) in the development and implementation of profession-specific retention & recruitment strategies and orientation
- Contributes and/or participates in performance appraisals to support professional development goals.
- Collaborates with Director of Interprofessional Practice, Research and Education, the CTM and HR in the resolution of practice issues; develops learning plans as required.
Education
The Professional Practice Leader (PPL) for Practice and Education of Respiratory Therapy will provide RT’s and other health professionals with continuing education and professional development opportunities. They will actively participate in the development and implementation of new clinical practice guidelines and facilitate the orientation of new staff.
Qualifications
- Member in good standing of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
- CSRT/RTSO affiliation preferred
- Current BCLS certification required; ACLS, PALS, NRP an asset
- Masters degree in a health related field preferred, undergraduate degree required
- Minimum 3 years recent acute care clinical experience
- Current or recent experience in adult education preferred
- Demonstrated ability to lead quality improvement projects
- Demonstrated knowledge and practice of strong adult education principles
- Demonstrated excellent collaboration/interprofessional skills
- Demonstrated satisfactory job performance and attendance
