Webinar Description:

Integrating patient partners into health professional education enriches learning, deepens empathy, and enhances clinical relevance. This interactive session explores how one post-secondary institution meaningfully engages patient partners across its health programs, and specifically within the respiratory therapy program. Attendees will hear directly from a patient partner sharing his personal experiences and perspectives, including what he hopes to see in future clinicians. The session will highlight  institutional initiatives, educational strategies, and practical tools that bridge patient voices with student learning. Participants will be invited to reflect on the impact of patient narratives and consider actionable ways to embed these voices into both their clinical practice and into their preceptoring approaches. By the end, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of why patient engagement matters and how they can implement these approaches in their own contexts.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the potential that a patient’s perspective has for your professional development.
  2. Reflect on the value of patient stories in shaping compassionate, person-centered care.
  3. Explore how one educational institution supports authentic patient partnerships.
  4. Outline practical tools to integrate patient perspectives into your clinical practice.
  5. Outline practical tools for the preceptor, to bring the patient perspective into your students' clinical education.

PRESENTERS:

Reg Gerlitzr was born in Calgary on December 10, 1949. That makes him 75 years old--so you can stop using your fingers to determine his age, as he likes to joke. He was married at 21 to a lovely lady and, together, they have two children. Each has grown into beautiful and loving adults. Him and his wife have been together for 53+ years and look forward to many more anniversaries.  Reg's experiences with osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure have led to frequent use of health services in Alberta, resulting in both positive and negative outcomes. These motivated him to become an Patient Family Advisor with Alberta Health Services in 2018 and a Patient Partner with SAIT Polytechnic in 2023.

Meredith Patey is a Respiratory Therapist living in the Calgary area. She spent 18 years at the bedside working in acute care, the operating room as well as pulmonary diagnostics. She chose to move to education where she is in her thirteenth year at SAIT as an Instructor for the Respiratory Therapy program.  Meredith is a past board member for her provincial regulatory body, the College of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta, as well as a current member of the CSRT board.  She is an EQual surveyor with Accreditation Canada as well as a peer reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy. Meredith is active in trying to make a difference in the profession by getting involved in equity, diversity and inclusion as much as she can.  It is her mission to help encourage learners to develop a passion and love for Respiratory Therapy.

Jennifer Stefura is a Respiratory Therapist who has spent the majority of her career in education, with over 20 years’ experience at SAIT Polytechnic.  The bulk of those years were as faculty in the Respiratory Therapy program, then supervising the RT and paramedicine programs. Since 2021 she has been supporting the School of Health and Public Safety’s 20+ programs as Supervisor of Quality and Strategic Initiatives.  This role is a unique blend of quality processes, like accreditation and program quality assurance, and projects that align with the School’s strategic initiatives, such as interprofessional education, research and patient partnerships.
